And after going through the exact Transition Sticking Point with Students , I sometimes ask  a little ” fun” multiple choice question like this…

” Approximately how much have You had to move one of your hands/ or fingers on the Guitar”
a. 1 Mile
b. Half a Mile
c. A lot less than that…
And they always answer a lot less – infact they are often surprised how subtle, how slight, how little the shift has to be, es pecially when it is very carefully and very patiently broken down for You..
Because It doesn’t matter for You whether its
  •  making your first note or
  • making your first chord, or
  • changing Your first chord pair, or
  • Playing Your first song or
  • playing your first lead guitar solo – or
  • perhaps even pulling out of Pentatonic Prison and connecting the whole neck to get a more intuitive feel and for example Play Blues Rock and Beyond… Metal styles even….
Because The shift is Always small – and yet doubt, uncertainty, Fear perhaps makes it feel like its something big.
This is why when it comes to Guitar, having had the privilege of sharing what I know with beginners and way beyond from age 11 to 72 – I always say your Next Key Transition Point is ALWAYS something small – You may not yet know exactly what that is – and that depends on what Your goals are…
But it’s really surprising how the difference between Guitar Agony and Guitar Ecstasy (the twin impostors and You should not be sucked in by either of them)… very surprising how it is always a small shift.
That’s why when it comes to Guitar FEAR is actually Not a word but an acronym …
it is F.E.A.R which stands for False Evidence Appearing Real..
And even if You don’t yet know exactly what the Key Transition Point, exact set of steps are blocking You on Your Guitar Journey, at least understanding that it is very likely Something very small is the starting point of progress.
In baseball they say the difference between heaven and hell is one tenth of an inch,
well on guitar it is ALWAYS always smaller than that – the exact steps in the exact order
