Age does certainly play a part in what a student can do with an instrument like the guitar. Unlike a piano where You only need one hand to sound a note, and yet on guitar You use both hands to sound notes – so there might be some synhcronisation challenges for very young students.

Suzuki method Violin teachers have been able to make progress with students as Young as Three or even Two- although that has more to do with developing their passion and interest for Music in General.

Two things that seem to make more of a difference than the age of the student, is their level of fascination with the Guitar – and in my case – their fascination with Rock/ Metal, Blues and Indie styles of guitar – as Dance, R&B is not really our fascination our passion. So a student who may only be 11 years of age but  is really genuinely fascinated with Music can certainly learn and progress and make breakthroughs.

The other factor more important than student age is the level of parental interest. For example Parents that see Guitar as “just another activity” to fill out their children’s time – and their role as a never ending taxi service – constantly ferrying them from oone place to another, and secretly wishing and hoping that the kids would give something up real soon – well this has far more of a bearing than your child’s age – Parents who are supportive and take a keen interest in their Child’s Musical development find that their children are more likely to develop their musical skill to a high level and have a lot of fun while creating a lot of great memories & experiences memories & experiences in the process.
