Do You Want To Learn to Progress on Guitar, and yet find that there’s something holding You Back ?

Here are 7 key reasons Why You might Not Yet Feel Ready and What You can do about them to help You win the Tug Of War.

1) You Don’t Have The Time?

2) You doubt You have the ability ?

3) You doubt You have the Talent ?

4) You have tried learning before and the Guitar is gathering dust ?

5) You don’t feel You can get past where You are right Now – You feel blocked in Your Playing.

6) You don’t feel You have the motivation to progress ?

7) You play to a reasonably good level, You should be better than You already are and You shouldn’t be thinking about Lessons?

1) You Don’t Have The Time?

For You Playing Guitar would be all well and good – it’s just that You don’t have the time; there’s already competing demands on Your limited Time  – You have to give at work/ in your career, and then ofcourse there’s Your family to think of  – it always seems like You have to be giving giving giving – and Yet if all You ever do is give, what happens if You find yourself almost close to running on empty – what happens if You find Yourself giving so much that it feels like there’s no more left to give, that You are always coming second.

By putting Yourself first, and giving YOU a gift is a great way to re-charge, and if learning Guitar happens to be one of those things You keep promising Yourself – then surely giving Yourself the all important Sanctuary Time of Learning Guitar, putting Yourself first for a change,  and being able to relax while playing for Your own Pleasure might just be the type of thinking that can help You overcome this Tug of War – By You giving to YOU, something that means a lot, like learning guitar, can mean that You almost replenish Yourself and can continue giving whether at Work or to Your family, Your community or your other interests.

The danger is if You don’t make time for You, You could if not carefull get close to burn -out!

2) You doubt You have the ability ?

You may have some level of doubt for any type of interest, activity or hobby, including learning a Musical instrument, like the Guitar – perhaps You have already tried learning, or know others who have tried and not been successful at learning to play Guitar – perhaps that is where the doubt comes from – trying books, videos, Guitar teachers even. The one question You need to consider if You or someone else has tried books, videos, other teachers is this : Did these books, videos or other teachers show You any proof that their methods work.

If the answer is No they didn’t show any proof – well then its not Your fault – You were just using the wrong books, videos and/ or teachers –  ones that couldn’t actuallly show You any proof that they work.

And if that’s true for YOU, then its not Your ability that You should doubt – instead you should be skeptical about the book, the video, the teacher, the learning method – until You can see and hear Proof that what the book or teacher claims to be able to teach is true.

Instead You should consider turning Your doubt about You into being skeptical about your doubt about You – that’s what 70 Year Old Beginner John Did proving what an inspiration he is

3) You doubt You have the Talent ?

In the Book “Talent is Over-rated” – the author talks about “You guessed it” – how Talent is overrated in any activity including developing Skills to Play Guitar.

Something that is far more important than “Talent” is Your level of desire; how much do You really want to Play Guitar the way You have always wanted to play? Is this something You want to just Play for Your own Pleasure, or with family and friends.

In other words having enough good reasons, that are both meaningful and powerful to You – are way more important

than talent in learning guitar – this passion is what Luke’s Mum Gill and 1 year old Luke talk about which even had Luke Playing at Coventry Ricoh Arena and his Guitar Journey so far

4) You have tried learning before and the Guitar is gathering dust ?

The danger with this one is that it’s likely if You have tried before, You now feel that you lack the ability or talent to learn – and yet its likely that the method, book, video or even teacher You tried to have teach You could not demonstrate proof that their way works – how much does the book, video know about your goals of how You want to Play guitar – and without knowing this – how could You possibly learn?

If You have tried before and learning just hasn’t worked  for  You, it’s not Your fault and here’s why.

  • Did the book, video or DVD actually understand how You best and uniquely learn to meet your unique individual style?
  • If You have tried learning with a Teacher how much did they really try and find out about Your Musical interests, about Your Goals – about what learning to Play Guitar would really mean to You
  •  Did any of the things You may have tried show any proof or evidence that what they do actually works?
If You can relate with any of these or something similar resonates with You – then You absolutely must know it is not
your fault – although if You believe that Playing Guitar The Way You want to Play would be an important part of your life –
then it is Your responsibility to do  something about it.
And that’s exactly what 70 Year Old John did –  70 Year Old Beginner John’s Guitar Dreams are finally coming true

5) You don’t feel You can get past where You are right Now On the Guitar  – You feel blocked in Your Playing.

Perhaps You feel blocked in Your playing right now – Yes You can play and yet there are just some problems with your playing

that You can’t seem to get past. The Problem might be how exactly You’re thinking about the problem – are You actually sure that you are dealingd with the problem itself- or is it just the symptoms – If you try and and resolve the symptoms on your own,the danger is that You are still left with the root problem -maybe You have already tried different approaches and yet You don’t see any progress – this is where a Teacher can help by more acurately assessing Your root problem areas and in a structured way help You overcome the problem areas and take Your Playing to new heights and new levels – this is something for example student Dan did going from Beginner to Workshop to Stage to Band to Recording Lead Guitar In Studio

6) You don’t feel You have the motivation to progress ?

Increased Guitar motivation and Guitar Confidence comes from increased Guitar competence.

So if You are not sure where to start, or how to overcome Your stumbling blocks then its no surprise You don’t have the motivation to progress – after all what You are trying to do doesn’t seem to be working – it’s all too easy to get caught up in watching someone else making it all look oh so easy –  and yet are You even sure that what it is You are trying to do is the right thing that You should be trying to do at Your stage in Your Playing – with so much information around – it’s easy to get caught up in trying to walk before You run.

The other side of course is the upward spiral that does come when You are seeing, hearing and experiencing progress in Your playing – this is what will motivate You to play more and  achieve more – and following a structured format that makes clear sense for You to allow You to do exactly that allowing You to play and express  new Musical Ideas that You perhaps could not before – like retired HeadMaster Arnold – ” I kept thinking I’m not going to be able to do that…. ” Arnold Playing and Progressing The Blues

7) You play to a reasonably good level, You should be better than You already are and You shouldn’t be thinking about Lessons

If You feel that You already play to a good level then it is a good idea to give yourself some credit for that – although You must be carefull it’s all too easy to get caught up in the things that You cannot yet do on the guitar – at the same time the danger is that if You level off  at a plateau in your playing – boredom can creep in as well as a sense that You should be better than You already are and You haven’t experienced the progress that You want to – the fastst way to the flip side is working with a Teacher who can help inspire and motivate You to take your playing to new levels while taking into account where You are right now and where You want to be and even beyond – this was student Chris experience when he wwent from near beginner to developing the confidence to play at his own wedding reception : Chris rocks his own wedding Reception
